CO2 balances: Recognize, understand, avoid

The basis for active climate protection is a carbon footprint. It forms the basis for planning and controlling activities in all areas of the company. Only with the corresponding key figures are you able to recognize, understand and avoid your emissions.

The proven approach of a good climate strategy is based on the following three elements: Avoidance, reduction and compensation. In order to be able to act in such a strategy, one needs comprehensive information about one's own company but also about the supply chain or the use of products or services.

The initial step is to "identify" the emissions: Through a comprehensive analysis of existing emissions, for example in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the various sources of emissions and the respective volume of emissions are recorded based on standardized criteria. Only when the origin of the emissions has been identified can the task of avoiding or reducing them be set in motion.

"Understanding" generates an overview of reduction and avoidance options by means of combined methods. Using the information obtained in the "Recognize" phase and the possibilities from the "Understand" phase, actual activities can be planned.

The degree of influence on the emission source is an important criterion. Priority should be given to the aspect of emission avoidance, followed by the reduction of unavoidable emissions.

Activities that reduce the total amount of the CO2 balance are collected under "Avoid". Emissions that can neither be avoided nor reduced should be offset or compensated for via certificates from an appropriately qualified project.
