FAQ Booster workshop on data archiving

SAP classic archiving moves data from the productive database to an archive system on a rule-based basis. The focus here is clearly on controlling database growth and performance aspects.

SAP ILM-based archiving extends traditional archiving to meet the legal requirements of the GDPR and also supports you in blocking or deleting personal data. You can use ILM Retention Management for both the SAP Business Suite and the cloud versions of S/4HANA. Archived data remains available for audits without burdening the active system.

Data archiving is necessary to securely preserve important information over the long term and to comply with legal and organizational retention requirements. It protects data from loss or manipulation and ensures that it remains accessible and traceable in the future.

Archiving limits the growth of the HANA database, facilitates migration and reduces storage costs.

The implementation of SAP ILM is carried out according to an SAP standard workflow in which the ILM rules are implemented on a customer-specific basis.
