Q: Is this role required by law?

No. The AI Regulation does not provide for AI officers or require their appointment. The closest equivalent is human oversight under Article 26, which applies only to operators of high-risk systems – and, following the deadline extension, only as of December 2, 2027.

Q: Where does AI governance begin?

With an inventory. Without an overview of which AI systems are used in the company – including those independently implemented by business units – it is impossible to determine a risk class or enforce a policy. Everything else builds on this list.

Q: Does AI governance fit into our existing ISMS?

Yes, and that’s the most efficient approach. Risk management, policy management, training, and internal audits are already part of the ISMS. Artificial intelligence is simply added as another subject area. ISO/IEC 42001 follows the same basic structure as ISO/IEC 27001 and can therefore be easily integrated.
