Templates - the key to a unified company

Phases and difficulties of template management

Template management enables customers to manage their company over great distances using a wide variety of SAP installations. With the help of work packages in which several standardized processes are bundled, the work processes within the organization are coordinated with one another. When creating and maintaining these (so-called) templates, a lot of consulting is often required.

The first hurdles are template architecture and customization. Legal, technical and operational circumstances as well as the integration into existing templates of the same system track are only part of the framework conditions to be considered.

During the subsequent implementation, the question of the project method and the correct structure of the development and test phase usually arises.

The decisions to be made with regard to release strategy and change management are just as complex. The project method according to which the release scopes are formed, as well as the organization of the recording, evaluation and implementation of the change request, are decisive for successful template management.

The aim of the following rollout is to use the right strategy to keep project risk, costs and project duration as low as possible. Essential here are problems such as: Can or must there be a cross-site rollout? This one in power levels or with a big bang? Are there any constraints on system availability? How are users involved and supported in the rollout? Who is responsible for planning and monitoring the cutover?

Finally, before application management, it is necessary to clarify which locations, time zones, languages, critical processes, support levels and user groups are to be considered. In addition, issues such as the possibility of outsourcing or partial outsourcing to nearshoring and offshoring as well as the establishment of on-call duty must be clarified.
